Speed was married and had two children.

"I am devastated. It was a privilege to work with him and call him a friend," said former Wales national team coach Mark Hughes.

Longtime friend in the national team Ryan Giggs also said: "Speed was one of the nicest people in football. One of those whom I can call a friend with the greatest respect both on and off the field. I cannot put into words how I feel."

Overwhelmed by the tragedy, "Liverpool" striker Craig Bellamy asked for permission from the coaches not to participate in the important match against "Man City".

"They were very close, Gary was like a teacher to our player, a true example. Bellamy is very devastated, and football is not as important as grief," said Liverpool's coach Kenny Dalglish.

"My thoughts are currently with Speed's family and friends. The world lost a great coach, but more importantly - an amazing person. He will be missed by everyone," said defender Aaron Ramsey, who was appointed as the team captain by Speed.

Emotions also poured out from another Welsh national team defender Robbie Savage. Giving an interview to BBC television, the man couldn't hold back tears, recalling that on the eve of the tragedy he spoke with Speed on the phone and joked.
