M. Clattenburg: "Premier" league forced me to leave Mourinho

Mark Clattenburg revealed that he decided to leave the Premier League after a confrontation with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

About his departure from England and joining the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, the referee revealed in February.

The 42-year-old referee made his debut in the Premier League back in 2004, but enjoyed his work only until January 2017, when the "Red Devils" played against Stoke City.

In that match, Wayne Rooney broke Sir Bobby Charlton's goal record, even though it ended in a 1-1 draw.

"I refereed the match where Rooney broke Bobby Charlton's record and Mourinho came into my dressing room unhappy because I didn't award a penalty kick for handball," Clattenburg told the "Men in Blazers" show.

"I came out of that Stoke closet, where the stadium always was the coldest, it was always wet and unpleasant, and refereeing Manchester United was never easy."

"After those matches, I felt that I had performed well, but he came into the dressing room and criticized my performance for the handball incident, even though I saw clearly that the ball had bounced off his chest. I knew I was right, but he planted doubt in my mind."

"I drove home 250 miles thinking I had made a big mistake. My wife knew that my attitude had changed and I thought, 'Do I still want to be a part of this? Do I really want to be a referee?'"

"That's when I started to search for myself. I didn't enjoy it as much as I used to, so I had to get out."

During his time in England, Clattenburg was considered one of the best referees in the world.
