Former Argentine national team star Marcelo Gallardo believes that his fellow countrymen can triumph in the upcoming summer World Cup solely because they have Lionel Messi in their lineup.
The striker for Barcelona, who has yet to reach the heights with the national team, will once again attempt to do so after a great personal season - so far he has scored 31 goals and made 16 assists.
Overall, the 30-year-old has achieved everything possible with the Catalan club, but he has not yet led the Argentinians to the highest podium of awards.
"I think Argentina has always been a leader in the world of football," said Gallardo.
"I believe that currently there are two or three teams better than Argentina in the world - firstly Brazil, then Germany and Spain, and then us."
"The fact that we have Messi in our team gives us a chance to win."
"We have that feeling. We feel that we can become the main team because we have Messi. However, Brazil, Germany, and Spain are better than us."
Four years ago in Rio de Janeiro, the Argentinians lost to Germany in the tournament final.
