Former England national team defender Martin Keown does not believe that Virgil van Dijk alone will solve Liverpool's defensive problems, but Jurgen Klopp has nothing to lose and the Reds' defensive line must change from the foundations.
Yesterday, social networks were buzzing with the news that Liverpool had reached an agreement with Southampton for the acquisition of 26-year-old center-back. Van Dijk became the most expensive defender in the history of the planet - £75 million was spent on him.
So far, the main pair of Liverpool's center-backs has been Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, but M. Keown is convinced that J. Klopp should use Joe Gomez more in the center-back position.
"What Jurgen Klopp should do now is give the opportunity for a new center-back pair to form. Joe Gomez should form a partnership with their record signing," said the former Arsenal player who has played in the past.
"While Matip and Lovren lack mobility in defense, Van Dijk and Gomez could complement each other perfectly. Joe currently mostly plays on the flank, but after the match with Arsenal, we saw that he is a center-back who does not play in his position. I think now is the most appropriate time to give Gomez a chance to show himself in the heart of defense," added M. Keown.
