Former Italian national football team defender Marco Materazzi once again spoke about his historical confrontation in the 2006 World Cup final with Frenchman Zinedine Zidane. He gave an interview to the portal "marcatv.com", in which he not only recalled the scandalous incident with a hit to the chest and reminded what words provoked Zidane to perform a headbutt. By the way, the Italian for the first time mentioned why he didn't hit the Frenchman back. "Z.Zidane's headbutt... I definitely didn't expect such a turn of events. If I had been prepared or anticipated such a hit or something similar, I would have definitely responded in a similar way or hit back. Clearly, we both would have ended up in the dressing rooms during the match. Luckily, I didn't expect that and managed to avoid any accidents resulting from that conflict. During the match, my national team mate Gennaro Gattuso asked me to hold Zidane back. After the first clash, I apologized, but Zidane was already irritated. When we clashed for the third time, Z.Zidane came up to me and said that I should calm down and after the match I could ask him to give me his jersey. I told him that I would rather have his sister," - recalled Materazzi, reminiscing about the incident from 14 years ago.
