The security guard was soon escorted off the field, and Italy triumphed in the penalty shootout.
M. Materazzi revealed what he said to Z. Zidane that caused him to react.
The former center-back told "Italian Football TV" channel: "You know how it is in the NBA, players provoke each other? My provocation was nothing compared to that. He offered to exchange shirts after the game. I replied, 'No, I'd rather take your sister.'"
Z. Zidane said that the Italian was not talking about his mother, but specifically about his sister Lila.
"He provoked me by talking about my sister Lila. I'm not proud of it, but it's part of my career. Back then I was more sensitive. He didn't offend my mother, he offended my sister," - said the former "Real" player to "L'Equipe" newspaper a few years ago.
