Former England national team striker Michael Owen can't remember when was the last time he saw "Manchester United" looking so bad.
Changes in the squad over the summer have not yet made the "Red Devils" look like they are capable of competing for titles this season. In the Premier League, after the first seven rounds, "Man Utd" has only two wins, and in the UEFA Europa League, they haven't shown any game that would ignite even a spark of hope.
In yesterday's match, "Man Utd" away ended in a goalless draw with Alkmaar AZ. The team from Manchester, without a win in the last ten away matches, did not even make a single shot on goal against the Dutch opponents.
"Manchester United is now a mid-table team," said M. Owen on BT Sport. "Personally, I don't expect them to finish in the top four this season."
"The top ten is very likely, but it's uncomfortable to even talk about it. This is the worst Manchester United team in decades.
This has been going on for several seasons. For 5-8 years you think that this team cannot fall any lower. The thing I want to emphasize is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - he weakened this team.
He got rid of players like Lukaku, Herrera, Darmian, Sanchez, and Smalling. He knew he could strengthen his squad with these players, but, in my opinion, he thought it was better to take a few steps back in this situation to then move forward.
I don't believe he thought that the current players are better than those who left. But he also thought about whether those players would go where they want to be.
I believe Ole got into a situation where he starts everything from scratch," added M. Owen.
