Michel Platini confirmed that he will seek to become the new President of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA).
Leading the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the 60-year-old Frenchman received massive support from the football world for his candidacy. As the new FIFA leader, the legendary Frenchman promises to open a new page in the history of world football.
Fulfilling the duties of FIFA Vice President, M. Platini informed all UEFA members about his intentions in writing.
"It was a very personal, well-thought-out choice both in terms of football and my own future. In life, there comes a time when you must take fate into your own hands," - the reasons for the leader's decision are quoted on the UEFA website.
Ranked as one of the best football players of all time, he is valued for his excellent managerial skills. Under his leadership, the number of participants in the European Championship was increased to 24 teams, and the Champions League tournament reached unprecedented popularity heights.
M. Platini has long been considered the most likely candidate to replace Sepp Blatter in the FIFA presidency, who, having refused to leave his position this year, was elected FIFA President for the fifth term on May 29.
Four days after the elections, S. Blatter, facing active actions by the Swiss and US prosecutors for corruption allegations in FIFA's activities, announced his resignation from the positions held.
The elections for the new FIFA President will take place on February 26 next year. Until that date, the scandalous S. Blatter will continue to lead the organization. He has been at the helm of FIFA since 1998.
