M. Platini detained in France for involvement in corrupt activities

Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been detained in France. It is reported that the 63-year-old Frenchman was visited by officials due to a corruption case, which was initiated due to the possibly illegal selection of the host of the 2022 World Cup. Qatar became the host.

On Tuesday morning, M. Platini was detained in Nanterre. The Frenchman served as UEFA president from 2007, when he replaced Lennart Johansson. M. Platini held the position until 2016, when he was disqualified from football for four years by the FIFA Ethics Committee. Later, the ban was reduced to four years.

The disqualification ended in March of this year, but investigators arrested him because M. Platini contributed to buying and falsifying votes, thus helping Qatar win the right to host the World Cup.

In 1998, M. Platini was a member of the FIFA World Cup organizing committee and joined the FIFA Executive Committee, but was removed in 2002.
