Mauricio Pochettino burst out: the coach urged Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to find a new "miraculous boy" if he hopes that Spurs will suddenly start winning the Premier League and Champions League trophies in such a situation within the team.
Although Tottenham fans have no doubt that Pochettino is "magical", the situation is currently complicated.
This is also the opinion of the coach himself, openly stating that "Daniel Levy told me that we need to win titles, we need to win the Champions League and the Premier League. Maybe he should find another miraculous boy who can guarantee that". He also added that after the recent losses to Burnley and Chelsea, it has become almost impossible for his team to catch up with Liverpool and Manchester City in the race for the big prize.
Pochettino joined the team back in 2014. At that time, he was given conditions that demanded that Hotspur enter the Top 4 until the new team stadium was completed. At that time, Hotspur had a permanent place in the Champions League, and this year, the fight for titles was not bad at all until the recent losses.
Experts note that Hotspur's budget, compared to other teams, is quite small, contributing to the complexity of the situation.
The coach receives a lot of criticism for not winning any titles, but he has a strong opinion about his contribution to the team: "I have doubts, but not about my future in this team. After five years, I think we are doing great work for the whole team and club. We have created an amazing platform for work, helping young players to improve - Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Harry Winks, but everything takes time, including the development and reaching the highest level of these players. People evaluate us and increase pressure, if we don't fight for any trophy, raising various questions. Is this right or wrong? Are we playing with one composition, or with a different one? Has our level remained the same, or are we improving? Or vice versa - is our game getting worse? I hear people say, "Pochettino has been working with the team for five years and still hasn't won any trophy". Yes, we haven't won, but what we have achieved and what we do is more important to me than winning a title. I will say this much, we do not intend to change the fundamental principles that guide the team".
Before Saturday's derby with Arsenal, Pochettino commented: "I cannot change others' opinion and everyone can assess us differently. That's why I'm telling you, if Daniel said to me that we have to win all the titles next season, maybe he should find another guy who can guarantee that".
It is worth noting that in the 2014/2015 season Hotspur finished 5th, in 2015/2016 - 3rd, the following season the team reached 2nd place. Last year they stayed in the top three, and this year they are currently also in 3rd place.
Football is the most popular sport in the world, so it is not surprising that even though there is still plenty of time until the end of the season, fans of the Premier League and the Champions League predict the results of the matches and the final places of the teams, as they participate in football betting.
Regardless, Pochettino is determined to fight: "We will fight. We will find ways to be competitive. But you cannot put a gun to my head and say "we must win", if we use different strategies in the fight than other teams".
It is no secret that Pochettino had to work under tougher conditions. For the last one and a half years, while the new stadium was being built, the team had to train and play at Wembley Stadium. However, despite everything, the coach believes that what the team has achieved is much more important than winning the title and adds, "being in the top four, playing in the Champions League - this was just a dream for the past five years. Of course, winning a title and reaching the top of the trophies would be amazing, and we would love that. Due to Brexit, the stadium construction costs have increased by 30-40 percent, so the club now has a huge responsibility. We have to live through and pay everyone's wages over the next few years - both players, managers, negotiators, and everyone else, at the same time paying money to the bank. And that is a very difficult job for any club".
