Madrid's "Atletico" defender Mario Suarez believes that his team, in order to defend the "La Liga" title, must stop relying on set pieces.
On Sunday, thanks to goals from Tiago and Suarez, Diego Simeone's team bounced back from a loss to "Valencia" by beating Barcelona's "Espanyol" 2-0.
Both "rojiblancos" defenders scored accurately after a corner kick. Interestingly, 10 out of 14 of Atletico's goals in the national league this season were scored from set pieces.
Suarez admits that the team takes pride in the hard work paying off during training sessions, but also states that the team is in danger of becoming too dependent on such home assignments.
"Set pieces are a good thing and we work hard to practice them," the defender said. "They have borne fruit, but we must also score from open play, as in that case opponents will know what to expect from us."
Mario Suarez also mentioned that the current priority for Atletico is the upcoming UEFA Champions League match against "Malmo". The Spaniard hopes that the Madrid club can maintain the level of play demonstrated over the weekend.
