M. van Praag withdrew his candidacy in the FIFA presidential elections

The leader of the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), Michael van Praag, has decided not to run for FIFA president elections and expressed his support for Jordan's Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein.

KNVB announced van Praag's withdrawal, and the leader himself will further comment on his decision at a press conference.

"After lengthy negotiations, Michael van Praag has decided to withdraw his candidacy for the FIFA presidency. Now he will support Prince Ali Al Hussein," the press release states.

It is believed that this step is an attempt to unite forces against the current leader Sepp Blatter, who is highly unpopular among football fans and has even been accused of awarding World Cup hosting rights to Russia and Qatar in exchange for bribes.

However, Blatter is likely to be re-elected. This is why van Praag is not the first candidate to withdraw. The only other contender besides the aforementioned two is Portuguese legend Luis Figo.

Blatter has been leading FIFA since 1998.
