During Sunday's English Premier League match, Newcastle beat Manchester United 1-0, with the winning goal scored by 19-year-old debutant Matty Longstaff.
The youngster found out the night before the match that he would have a chance to play in this game, so he admitted to hardly sleeping from excitement and being very nervous.
Longstaff seized the opportunity that presented itself - his long-range strike in the 72nd minute was the only goal and secured victory for Newcastle.
"After training on Saturday evening, I was told I would play against Manchester United. Until then, it was just a dream for me," said Matty, who played alongside his brother Sean in midfield. "As kids, we used to kick the ball around in the yard and dream of playing together for our hometown team someday. Now we have helped them beat Manchester United. It sounds a bit surreal."
After the match, both brothers did a lap of honor around St James's Park stadium.
"It's a great moment for both brothers. They'll talk about it, write about it, show it everywhere - on Match of the Day, in the press, on social media," noted BBC radio commentator Pat Nevin.
Newcastle coach Steve Bruce hoped that Sunday's hard-fought victory would be a turning point for his team, which had a difficult start to the season.
Commenting on Longstaff's goal, Bruce said: "I've seen Matty score goals like that many times in training. But to do it in front of a crowd of thousands... I noticed during preseason that Matty had the desire to play. I thought, where did this redhead come from? He's like a breath of fresh air for us.
Stepping onto the pitch, this kid didn't falter and enjoyed the game. He slept poorly last night, and the same awaits him tonight. It's a memorable story."
