In the spotlight unexpectedly appeared Leverkusen's defender Michael Ballack.
One of the most famous German footballers of the last decade returned to Leverkusen in 2010, but did not live up to expectations due to injuries.
"Ballack's game disappointed me. He can influence the stands with his aura, but we don't see that," said Bayer's managing director Wolfgang Holzhauser. "Michael has a contract and we respect it, but if a club comes up, we will negotiate."
Meanwhile, the Manchester team lacks midfielders, and Ballack could be a short-term solution to the problem.
