Current Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's career could have turned out completely differently.
Former "Red Devils" club chairman Martin Edwards revealed an interesting story and perhaps a lesson that could have been the solution for the current "Gunners" team.
According to the Englishman, 16 years ago they unexpectedly heard Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson's desire to retire and take a well-deserved break, so they had to make decisions quickly.
"It shocked us. When we realized that the coach was serious, we immediately started looking for a successor.
Our first choice was A. Wenger. Since 1996, he had been quite successful in leading Arsenal, especially when he won two titles in a season.
Of course, a little later the Frenchman had to go through not the best times, but then he was the best candidate to replace Alex.
Wenger showed interest and we met in London several times. However, in the end he said "no" because he felt loyalty to the then vice president David Dein and hoped that something special had started with Arsenal club," Edwards said.
At the end of the season, Manchester United still received good news - A. Ferguson decided to stay and won another 7 Premier League titles, retiring in 2013.
