Coach Steve McClaren could become the new assistant coach of the England national team, as the current coach Brian Kidd has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Steve McClaren previously worked as an assistant coach to Sven Goran Eriksson during the 2002 World Cup. On the official website of Middlesbrough club, the coach said: "I spoke with Sven (S.G.Erikson) yesterday. He told me about Brian Kidd's operation. I am very sorry for him and the whole Middlesbrough club wishes him a quick recovery, but his condition does not change - he remains the assistant coach."

Having previously served as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant coach, he resigned from the national team in November 2002, stating that he wanted to focus on club work.

The England national team will play their first European Championship match on June 13 against the defending champions, the French team.
