On Wednesday evening, the first matches of the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup were played.
The footballers led by Benjaminas Zelkevičius from Liepaja's "Metalurgs" were unlucky. Although the Latvian team took the lead after the 15th minute goal by Mindaugas Kalonas, they failed to maintain the victory - Belgium's "Genk" won 3-2. M. Kalonas played the entire match, while Darius Miceika appeared on the field at the end of the game.
Nerijus Baras' new club "Krylja Sovietov" won at home against opponents from Belarus. Unfortunately, the Lithuanian was not included in the match protocol.
This time, Lithuanian clubs followed different paths after cruelly defeating the first stage teams of the UEFA Cup. Former opponents of Panevezys' "Ekranas" from Ireland's "Cork City" sensationally held a draw against the Swedish team "Djurgarden" 1-1. Things went worse for former "Atlantas" rivals "Rhyl" club. They lost at home with a minimal 0-1 margin against the Norwegian "Viking" team.
The return matches will be played after two weeks.
