The European Football Championship in 2020 could take place not in two states, but in as many as 12 or 13 cities throughout Europe. This idea expressed by UEFA President Michel Platini on Saturday in Kiev is quoted by the news website tvn24.pl.
This proposal should be considered by the UEFA Executive Committee at the end of this year or the beginning of next.
"I want to say something that will surprise you. I have a plan for 'Euro 2020' to take place all over Europe. This is just a proposal that will be considered by the UEFA Executive Committee. There will be meetings with federations, and a decision will be made in December or January," Platini said during a press conference in the Ukrainian capital. The conference took place a day before the final of "Euro 2012," where Italy will face Spain.
These changes are reportedly intended for the 60th European Championship. "The tournament could take place in 12-13 cities across the continent. This idea appeals to me, as well as to a significant portion of the Executive Committee members. Why mandate one or two countries to build ten new stadiums, airports, etc.? According to our plan, one stadium would be allocated to each country. Everything would be simpler and cheaper. But for now, it's just a proposal and nothing has been decided yet," emphasized Platini.
When asked about the increase in expenses for spectators traveling throughout Europe, Platini mentioned low-cost airlines and claimed that these trips would actually be cheaper than flying from London to Donetsk.
Azerbaijan and Georgia, as well as Ireland with Scotland and Wales, have expressed their desire to host "Euro 2020."
"Euro 2016" will take place in France. This will be the first time that 24 national teams will compete here.
