M.van Basten: the offside rule is irritating

During the past week, the Dutchman Marco van Basten, who caused a storm, has stepped back a bit, but still intends to fight for changes in football rules.

FIFA's director revealed to the press a number of possible proposals "on how to make this sport more attractive."

"I have read various inaccuracies in the media. The ten-step project? Where did that come from?

I marked a few things that we are working on, but they were not ten steps. Some proposed improvements to football rules were taken from my previous quotes.

Now we are focusing on implementing solutions to these issues: time wasting at the end of matches, protests against referee decisions, the fourth substitution in added time, successful tests with video assistance for referees, and the possibility of using electronic equipment such as a handheld computer on the substitutes' bench," the Dutchman said.

"We will wait to see what IFAB decides - they will either approve or we will need to conduct trials. We hope to hear an answer at the beginning of March."

Furthermore, van Basten expressed his opinion on eliminating the offside rule.

"I think it would be better without this annoying rule. I am convinced of that. Critics say that then attackers will stand in the penalty area waiting for the ball, as in a children's game.

But I do not think it will be constant, and teams will just create more chances."
