"Manchester United" shook up the transfer market this summer when they acquired center-back Harry Maguire from "Leicester City" for a record-breaking £80 million.
The "Red Devils" also showed interest in Napoli's defender Kalidou Koulibaly, but were not willing to pay his £150 million release clause.
Speaking to ESPN, Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis stated that given current market prices, K. Koulibaly is worth £250 million.
"Koulibaly has a £150 million release clause in his contract. But, for example, in England, more than £80 million was paid for one player, for whom our club would not pay more than £30-35 million.
With that in mind, I believe Koulibaly's value could reach £250 million, if such an amount was paid for that man," said A. de Laurentiis.
The president of the Italian club also insisted that English clubs are to blame for inflated player prices.
"English clubs are responsible for especially high player prices. They have much more money to spend than clubs in France, Spain, Italy, or Germany.
If a club has £800 million, then there are no problems in paying £80, 90, or even 100 million for a player. This is not fair and creates unfair competition between English clubs and clubs from other countries," added Napoli's president.
