During the friendly match that took place on Sunday, the Latvian national team experienced an unexpected and very painful failure.
In the away game, Latvia lost 0:1 to the Gibraltar national team. The only goal of the match was scored in the 88th minute, and it was successfully converted by the hosts' goalkeeper Liam Walker.
This was only the second victory of the tiny country in the entire history of the national team: until then, their only victory was achieved in 2014, when they defeated Malta 2:0. Before this victory, the country with just 30,000 inhabitants had suffered 23 consecutive failures, during which they had to retrieve the ball from the net 117 times.
Furthermore, in the FIFA rankings before this match, Gibraltar was in the last position, as being a member of this organization, their national team had not yet achieved a single victory. The only time they had won was when they belonged solely to the UEFA organization.
