It seems that the uncertainty regarding the 2006 "A Lyga" season has ended - Alytus "Alytis" refusing to play in the most powerful Lithuanian championship, where, as last year, ten teams will compete. This became clear after the Kėdainiai district municipality council agreed yesterday to provide additional funding to the city's "Nevėžis" club.
This week, the board of the "Nevėžis" club addressed the Kėdainiai district municipality in writing, requesting financial support. "The municipality promised to help us, so we decided to continue playing in the A League. This year, we made the decision much earlier than last year," said Saulius Skibiniauskas, the head of the "Nevėžis" club.
Now the team is training intensively. According to S. Skibiniauskas, they will be looking for players who can strengthen the team. For now, they don't have them yet, as "Nevėžis" only decided yesterday in which league to play. The team will be coached by Vytautas Vaškūnas, just like last season.
"Now it is important that "Nevėžis" is granted a license to play in the A League. The Kėdainiai stadium does not meet the requirements, so we will not be able to play home matches in our city. We have not yet decided in which city we will play home games. All stadiums are open, but geographically it is most convenient for us to play matches in Kaunas," said S. Skibiniauskas.
The head of "Nevėžis" said that they are considering various options on how to attract more spectators to the team's matches. It may be that "Nevėžis" fans will be brought to the matches by a bus hired by the club.
