"Everton" goalkeeper Nigel Martyn is ending his football career due to a recurring ankle injury. The 39-year-old player has been unable to play since January. Martyn, whose contract with the club expires at the end of this month, underwent examinations on Wednesday, which showed that the bone in his leg has not healed sufficiently. "I cherish every minute spent at Everton and I am very grateful to them," the player said in an interview with the club's official website. "A CT scan was performed to check if the bone fractures have healed, but it was clearly visible that they have not. This means that I will have to undergo another surgery to connect the bones." Martyn also added that he would have received a new offer from the club if the examinations had shown positive results. His last appearance for Everton was in a match against Chelsea on January 28. It was his 100th match for the team. The player joined Everton in October 2003, taking the place of Richard Wright in the starting lineup.
