The hosts had a golden opportunity to take the lead at the end of the first half, but H. Behrens failed to convert a penalty kick.
Nurnberg took the lead in the 83rd minute with a goal by Y. Kubo.
Schalke equalized just a few minutes later - M. Nastasic directed the ball into the net after a corner kick.
