Club defender Olof Melberg signed a new four-year contract. The team captain will remain at the club until June 2008.
The 26-year-old Swede is considered one of the most consistent defenders in the English Premier League. "Aston Villa" is currently in 5th place in the championship, but they have already lost hope of playing in the Champions League next year.
"I want to play in Europe, at Aston Villa, and I hope to achieve something with them," said the player. "I think we are moving in the right direction, especially in the last few months. I believe Aston Villa is now better prepared to meet all my needs than when I first arrived here. I see a great future for this club."
