Andre Villas Boas was officially appointed as the new head coach of London on Wednesday.
Speaking freely in English, the 33-year-old Portuguese, who is a contemporary of experienced midfielder Frank Lampard and striker Didier Drogba, signed a three-year contract and immediately started working. According to unofficial data, his salary will be around 5 million euros per season.
In addition, for leaving "Porto" with which he had a valid contract, he had to pay a compensation of 15 million euros.
In the "Chelsea" team, the strategist will not be a newcomer - from 2004 to 2007 he worked as an assistant to Jose Mourinho, responsible for analyzing the game of future opponents, and gained fame as a very meticulous and talented analyst.
"Andre is one of the most talented coaches in the world of football, as he has already achieved a lot in his relatively short career. His ambitions, determination and attitude align with the goals of the Chelsea club, so we are confident that he will succeed both in national competitions and in European cup tournaments," the Chelsea statement said.
In 2010, Villas Boas took over the reins of "Porto" and achieved impressive results: he won the Portuguese championship, as well as the national cup and the UEFA Europa League tournament. Andre Villas Boas, who has never played professionally, has been pursuing a coaching career since his teenage years.
In 1994, he was invited by the legendary Sir Bobby Robson to work as an intern with the "Porto" youth team, and in 2000, when he briefly coached the Virgin Islands team, he became the youngest national team coach in the world. However, both of his international matches were lost.
Since 2002, he has worked with Jose Mourinho in clubs such as "Porto", "Chelsea" and Milan's "Inter", and in 2009 he started his head coaching career with the "Academica" team of his native country.
After saving the Coimbra team from relegation to a lower league and reaching the semi-finals of the Portuguese Cup, Villas Boas caught the attention of the country's most famous club "Porto", where he spent one impressive season before returning to London.
