Claudio Ranieri was appointed as the new head coach of Milan on Thursday. The strategist signed a contract until the summer of 2013.

The 59-year-old Italian will replace Gian Piero Gasperini, who had only been in charge for three months and was fired after a very unsuccessful start to the season. "Inter" suffered four losses and one draw in five matches.

Speaking to journalists before the official appointment, Ranieri said: "Gasperini wanted to implement his ideas, including a tactical scheme with three defenders, but despite his attempts to do so at all costs, he was unsuccessful.

"I want the team to play with all their available strength - until recently, they knew how to do it. Gasperini didn't ruin everything, he had ideas. He should be praised for believing in his ideas and trying to implement them."

He continued: "Inter's squad is good, but the start of the season has been very unsuccessful. We need to talk to everyone to understand why this happened. We need to regain enthusiasm because all the conditions are there to achieve good results. I don't like to make promises, but the guys haven't shown everything they are capable of yet."

Since 2009, Ranieri has been in charge of the "Roma" team and finished second in the Italian championship. However, the last season was not as successful, so the specialist stepped down from his position at the beginning of this year. He has since worked as a commentator for RAI television.

Throughout his career, the Italian has also coached teams such as "Campania Puteolana", "Cagliari", "Napoli", "Fiorentina", "Valencia", Madrid's "Atletico", London's "Chelsea", "Parma" and Turin's "Juventus".
