PSV Eindhoven defender Mark van Bommel has signed a three-year contract with Barcelona. The representatives of the Dutch champions announced this on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old player had already announced that he would leave PSV after this season, when his contract expires. It has long been speculated that he would join the Spanish champions.

Barcelona confirmed the agreement with their new player on the official club website. It was agreed that the deal would not be announced until the club secures the titles of "La Liga" champions. The Catalans secured their first league title in six years on Saturday.

Van Bommel will be officially presented to the fans of the Catalan club after the World Cup qualifiers, in which the Netherlands will face Romania and Finland on June 4th and 8th respectively.

A member of the Dutch national team since 1999, Van Bommel helped PSV win four national championships. He played 169 league matches and scored 46 goals for the Eindhoven team.

In Barcelona, Van Bommel will join his compatriots Giovanni van Bronckhorst and coach Frank Rijkaard.
