The Darius and Girėnas Stadium has an official opening date.
Lithuanian Football Federation's General Secretary Edgaras Stankevičius announced during a press conference that the opening of the Darius and Girėnas Stadium will take place on October 16 during the LFF Cup final.
The Vilnius "Žalgiris" team will definitely play in the final. The second team will be determined tomorrow. The semi-final will be between the "Hegelmann" team from Kaunas district and the "Panevėžys" team.
The opening of the Darius and Girėnas Stadium on October 16 (Sunday) will start at 17:00.
Fans with a ticket to the match will be able to use public transportation free of charge on the day of the stadium opening.
Tickets for the stadium opening will go on sale starting tomorrow (Wednesday). They can be purchased on the kakava.lt website.
LFF also plans that on November 16, the first national team match between Iceland and Lithuania could take place at this stadium.
During the stadium opening in Kaunas, UEFA and FIFA representatives will visit, who will give final approval to host the Baltic Cup match between the Icelandic and Lithuanian national teams.
During the press conference, E. Stankevičius also expressed hope that in the near future, everything will be resolved between the Parliament and the federation, and no drastic measures will be necessary. It is worth mentioning that recently there was a proposal to introduce direct control, which would automatically remove Lithuanian teams from European UEFA tournaments and harm many Lithuanian teams due to reduced funding.
