Argentinian national team coach Sergio Batista, who was fired, is being replaced by Alejandro Sabella.

The 56-year-old specialist won the Copa Libertadores tournament with "Estudiantes" two years ago, but in early 2011 he stepped down from his duties. He had received a lucrative offer from the United Arab Emirates club "Al Jazira," but decided to take over the national team.

Batista lost his job after the Copa America tournament, in which the Argentinian hosts were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Argentina has not won prestigious Copa America or World Cup trophies since 1993. However, the country celebrated gold medals in the Olympic Games in 2004 and 2008.

The last two World Cup stages ended for the Argentinians in the quarterfinals, losing to Germany.
