At the UEFA leaders' meeting held on Sunday, it was revealed that another club tournament will open in the Old Continent from 2021. Currently, UEFA has established two tournaments - the Champions League and the Europa League. In total, 80 European clubs had the opportunity to compete in these tournaments, and after the creation of another tournament, there will be room for 32 more teams. It is announced that the tournament, which currently does not have a real name, will have the same format as the Champions League - 32 clubs will compete in four groups of eight. However, clubs that finish in second place will not immediately advance to the quarterfinals - the teams that finish in 2nd and 3rd place in the groups will compete for a ticket to the next stage. The third tournament will also change the format of other UEFA leagues. The Europa League will replace the Round of 16 with a new type of knockout round, where clubs finishing in third place in the Champions League and second place in the Europa League groups will face each other. The matches of the new tournament should be played on Thursdays along with the Europa League.
