One of the greatest Spanish midfielders of all time, Xavi, announced at a press conference that he will end his career at FC Barcelona after the season and move to Qatar.
The intentions of the 35-year-old footballer to say goodbye to his only career team have been discussed since the beginning of the season. Xavi emphasized that Barcelona offered him to extend his contract, but he decided that now is the right time to say goodbye.
"I want to announce that I am leaving after the season," Xavi said at the press conference. "This decision is difficult, but final. The club offered to extend the contract, which I greatly appreciate, but it's time to bid farewell to the club."
"I will continue playing. Al Sadd has an exciting prospect. I will sign a two-year contract, with the possibility of extending for another year.
"Leaving Barcelona will not stain my career. Of course, I would like to continue playing here, but I know I have to play at a lower level. In Qatar, I may be able to build myself as a coach or sports director," added the club legend.
Xavi made his debut in the main Barcelona team in 1998. During the whole period, he played 764 matches and scored 84 goals.
With Blaugrana, the midfielder won a total of 23 trophies. By the end of the season, Xavi will have the opportunity to increase this number to 25.
