Young Lithuanian national team forward Simonas Stankevičius has joined the Vilnius football club "Žalgiris". The country's champions acquired the 20-year-old player from the English "Premier League" leading club "Leicester City".
Although the Lithuanian has not worn the main kit of "Leicester City", he has constantly trained with their most skilled players. Recently, S. Stankevičius was loaned to the "Oldham Athletic" team competing in the "League One" championship.
The newcomer to Vilnius "Žalgiris" attracted the English attention with successful performances in the Lithuanian youth national teams. The forward left for "Leicester City" from the National Football Academy at just 16 years old, but he did not manage to secure more playing time on the field.
S. Stankevičius made his debut in the national team of our country in 2013 and has played 10 matches so far.
However, this year the forward stood out not in the main Lithuanian team, but in the youth (U-21) national team.
In the European Championship qualifying match held in Vilnius in November, S. Stankevičius contributed a goal to the Lithuanian victory against one of the group leaders, the Irish footballers.
S. Stankevičius became the third newcomer to Vilnius' "Žalgiris". The team was also joined by other Lithuanian national team members Saulius Mikoliūnas and Linas Klimavičius.
The official presentation of the "Žalgiris" newcomer will be held on Thursday at the "Sportima" arena in Vilnius.
