Legendary goalkeeper of Munich and the German national team Oliver Kahn stated that if he had been defending the national team's goal in the summer World Cup, the champions would not have been the Italians, but the hosts of the tournament.
After long deliberation, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann handed over the main goalkeeper duties to Jens Lehmann, with whom the Germans advanced to the semifinals and ultimately secured third place.
"I don't criticize Jens Lehmann, but with me Germany would have been world champions," – the 37-year-old veteran, who retired from the national team, stated. "I am convinced of this because in my career I have come across very similar situations. In 1994, with "Karlsruhe," I reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, and just two years later, representing "Bayern," I won this trophy.
"In 1999, under very painful circumstances, I lost the Champions League final, but two years later, I held this trophy in my hands. Finally, in 2002, Germany stumbled only in the World Cup final. I truly believe that everything would have happened as before and in 2006 the gold would have been ours," the veteran said.
Kahn also stated that he had revealed his theory to Klinsmann before the championship, but at that time Klinsmann "did not understand or did not want to understand."
"I told him: why don't you want to admit that I am right?" – wondered the goalkeeper.
