After losing the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals and being knocked out of the tournament in Munich by Milan, captain Oliver Kahn criticized his teammates for not putting in enough effort on the field.
Bayern had an advantage in this quarterfinal tie because the first leg in Milan ended 2-2 with Bayern scoring two away goals, but they lost 0-2 at home.
"Most of our players need to improve," Kahn said to a German television station after the match. "It would have been better to lose 2-1 in the first leg in Milan, but today (Wednesday) on the field we would have needed to give more effort and fight harder."
"A team of the level of Milan can only be beaten by giving more than 100 percent effort. We didn't do that," the German added.
The former German national team goalkeeper added that after being knocked out of the Champions League, the most important thing for Bayern now is to focus on the national championship and secure second or third place, which guarantees a spot in next year's prestigious European club tournament.
In the Bundesliga, Bayern currently sits in fourth place, six points behind leaders Schalke from Gelsenkirchen, but just two behind third-placed Stuttgart. On Sunday, the Bavarian club will face Bayer Leverkusen.
"The situation is dangerous. We need to do everything to finish second or third. And that could be difficult," the veteran said.
