The forward of the Nigerian national team, Obafemi Martins, after another successful start to the season, has extended his contract with the Milan club until 2010. His previous contract was valid for another three years, until 2008.
O. Martins, who is known for his lightning speed and famous for his acrobatic goals, scored in the weekend match against "Reggina." He constantly plays in the starting lineup for "Inter" and forms a striking duo with Brazilian Adriano.
O. Martins arrived in Italy five years ago and for a while represented the third division team "Reggiana." In 2001, "Inter" bought him for 750 thousand euros - after spending a season in the youth team, Martins made his debut in the Italian championship at the age of 18. He soon revealed his talent to the world by scoring a decisive goal in the Champions League group stage against Leverkusen's "Bayer."
In the semifinals of the tournament, O. Martins scored the only goal of his team in the derby against "Milan," but "Inter" was knocked out of the tournament due to an away goal. Starting to play regularly in the starting lineup, the young forward gradually established himself and has now scored a total of 43 goals in 112 matches for the team.
However, as he will be unavailable to help his team in January - as he will be representing his country at the African Cup of Nations - the Milan team is already looking for a replacement and has set their sights on the 18-year-old forward from Verona's "Chievo," O. Martins' compatriot Victor Obinna. "Inter" has the first option on the latter player and could easily sign him, but due to his excellent performance, there is also a "threat" of a call-up to the Nigerian national team.
