"Manchester United" legend Paul Scholes believes that his former club is capable of getting involved in the fight for the Premier League title in the second half of the season.
After a turbulent start under new manager Louis van Gaal, the "Red Devils" are currently in third place in the table, which guarantees a spot in the UEFA Champions League. However, the team is trailing 10 points behind leaders Chelsea and seven behind Manchester City.
"If United win the next two matches [against Tottenham and Stoke City], I wouldn't be surprised if they embark on a similar journey to what Liverpool did last year - a great, long streak and pressure on the leaders," the former midfielder told the Daily Mirror.
"When the Champions League starts, United will have free weeks and can take advantage of this benefit."
Scholes was also impressed by Wayne Rooney's performance as a midfielder in yesterday's match against Newcastle. The Englishman scored two goals and provided an assist.
"Wayne demonstrated the highest class," added the Manchester United legend. "I still think he's one of the best midfielders. At the same time, he can also play a bit deeper."
"The ability to run from midfield to positions where goals are scored is an art. However, you still need to finish the attack, and Wayne managed to do that. He was outstanding all day."
