Longtime "Manchester United" defender Paul Scholes claims that in the UEFA Champions League, Yaya Toure is preventing another Manchester club, "City," from successfully competing.
In the first group stage match, the Ivory Coast national team defender failed to effectively stop Munich's "Bayern" attacks, causing the English champions to lose 0-1.
"I feel like the same City story is repeating itself in the Champions League," Scholes wrote for "The Independent." "Poor Yaya Toure's defensive play has become their main problem."
"I have seen opponents easily bypassing him more than once. He just didn't seem interested. Besides him, Fernandinho has to do the work of two players in defense, and against Bayern, this always caused problems."
"If City wants to make it to the quarter-finals this season, they must play with two defenders who are willing to work on their side of the field."
"In this case, Pellegrini should consider benching Toure or pushing him further forward. In the holding midfielder position, alongside Fernandinho, it might be worth letting Fernando or James Milner play."
