P.Ambrazevičius: "The Icelandic national team will surprise everyone the most"

ootball fans are counting down the last days until the European Football Championship. The month-long football fiesta will start on June 10th. The news portal Alfa.lt already offers to delve into the "Euro 2016" uproar and find out what well-known Lithuanian people think about the upcoming European Championship.

This time we suggest getting acquainted with the thoughts of successful project author and humorist Paulius Ambrazevicius.

A football fan will support many national teams in the Euro 2016 championship, as they feature several well-known footballers.

P. Ambrazevicius also revealed that he will watch some matches while in Iceland, and called England the dark horse.

Which national teams and why will you support the most?

Since Lithuania (my all-time favorite national team) and the Netherlands national team, which I have supported for several years, are not playing in the championship, this year my main favorites are Iceland, which I, like many Lithuanians, feel sympathy for. Also, at the beginning of the championship, I will travel with friends to Iceland, planning to watch the first matches in Iceland in the history of world and European championships. I will also support several individual players who play or have played in my favorite club "Tottenham Hotspur": Gareth Bale from Wales, Luka Modric from Croatia, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, and Eric Dier from the England national team. In general, in this championship, I will cheer for beautiful play and hope for a fight from all the national teams. Of course, there will probably be some favorites during the championship who will please with their style of play or something else (as in the last World Cup, you wanted to support Colombia).

In your opinion, who could be the dark horse?

Many say that the Croatians could be the unexpected team. I partly agree, but I think that the Iceland national team will be the most surprising. I also somehow believe that this year the England national team might perform better than expected, and better than history shows.

Who risks facing a fiasco at the start of the championship?

No other national team's downfall (unless it's the Germans or the French) in the early stages of the championship would become such a fiasco as England's - given their constant pressure from fans and the media, any place other than the first for them could be a fiasco. So, I choose - both the dark horse and potential authors of the greatest fiasco are the English, although they play in a fairly weak group.

What do you think about the fact that the number of participating teams was expanded from 16 to 24?

Each expansion means that Lithuania's national team has a better chance of qualifying for the championship. But, seriously, this is more of a challenge for coaches, to prepare the team to reach its peak form and maintain it for a longer period than before. And for football fans, this is an obvious good - even more of the best national teams playing football.

Your prediction: which national teams will meet in the final?

I think the semi-finals will be: Spain vs. England and Germany vs. France, and it's very hard to say who will advance, but I think the English could end their fifty-year phase of pain.

Do you expect Lithuania's national team to ever qualify for the European or World Cup?

Yes.
