Italian Alberto Malesani was appointed as the new coach of Panathinaikos on Wednesday, becoming the third coach of the team this season - in October Zdenek Scasny had taken over this post from Itzhak Shum.
It is believed that the 50-year-old Malesani, who has previously coached teams such as "Chievo", "Fiorentina", "Verona", "Parma", and "Modena" during his career, has signed an 18-month contract which will earn him around 720 thousand euros.
Although the club did not officially confirm the change of coach until Wednesday, youth team coach Panagiotis Fylakouris temporarily took over the duties of the head coach in last weekend's match against "Apollon" and also in today's UEFA Europa League match against "Sevilla."
"Panathinaikos" withdrew from the Greek Cup tournament at the beginning of the month and currently occupies the second place in the national championship, trailing the leader "Olympiakos" by five points. The club is likely hoping for a good performance in the UEFA Europa League under the new coach, A. Malesani, who won the tournament six years ago with the "Parma" team.
This season, Lithuanian goalkeeper Raimondas Žutautas has practically not played in the Greek champions club, as he suffered a severe knee ligament injury before the start of the season and has not been able to recover since.
