In the Champions League match against Lisbon's "Benfica", the captain of Barcelona, Carles Puyol, suffered an unsuccessful fall and a gruesome elbow injury and will be out of matches for about two months.
After examining the player's condition, the doctors of the Catalan club confirmed the initial prognosis - C. Puyol will not be able to play for approximately 8 weeks. It was determined that the footballer had avoided bone fractures, so surgery will not be necessary. The player's arm will be immobilized in a special brace.
After 77 minutes of play, C. Puyol jumped for a corner kick and fell awkwardly while fighting for the ball. In a replay of the television broadcast, it can be seen that the defender's left elbow bone is unnaturally twisted. The sight shocked Puyol's teammates, and even Alexis Sanchez did not look away for a while.
The footballer was immediately taken off the field and transported to a hospital in Lisbon. There, Barcelona president Sandro Rosell and sports section manager Andoni Zubizarreta visited him after the match.
It was determined that C. Puyol had dislocated his elbow. It is predicted that if the bone damaged internal tissues, the defender may have to undergo surgery. In that case, it is believed he will be unable to play for at least two months. If surgery is not necessary, the player's rehabilitation could last from 4 to 6 weeks.
