Several unexpected results occurred in the South American World Cup qualifiers. Venezuela defeated Ecuador's national team 2:1 at home. This was only the second victory for Venezuelans in this qualifier, allowing the South American team to get closer to other teams in the tournament table. Bolivia also secured their second victory in this qualifier by defeating Peru's national team 1:0 at home. Meanwhile, Brazil failed to defeat Colombia away (0:0) and lost their first points in this qualifier. Argentina also secured another victory by defeating Uruguay 3:0 at home. Lionel Messi scored his 80th goal for the Argentine national team, while Lautaro Martinez and Rodrigo de Paul also scored goals for the Argentinians. In another important match, Chile secured a crucial victory by defeating Paraguay 2:0 thanks to goals from Ben Brereton and Mauricio Isla. This victory keeps Chile's chances alive to qualify for the World Cup.
