Derby County confirmed that they have granted permission for Frank Lampard to leave and start negotiations with London's Chelsea.
Following Maurizio Sarri's decision to move to Juventus in Turin, the manager's seat at Chelsea became vacant. The surname Lampard has been associated with this position for quite some time.
Derby County stated that Lampard has the full right to finalize his contract formalities with Chelsea.
"We can confirm that we have given Chelsea the opportunity to speak with Frank Lampard about the vacant managerial position. Both teams will soon start preparing for the season, so we expect the discussion to be resolved soon," Derby County wrote in a statement.
It is now only a matter of time before Chelsea officially announces Lampard's return to the club.
Last season, the 41-year-old Englishman led Derby County to the Championship playoffs final, where the third ticket to the Premier League was at stake.
