Peru made an effort to ensure there were no intrigues in Group C during the last round. The Australians had to win and hope for a Danish loss to advance to the Round of 16.
Nevertheless, Peru defeated Australia 2-0, making it easier for the Danes and allowing them to leave the World Cup with their heads held high.
Peru finished in third place with three points, while Australia, with just one point, ended up in the last place in the group.
Peru started the match better. Although both teams were cautious in the first few minutes, Peru managed to take the lead in the 18th minute.
Paolo Guerrero crossed the ball into the penalty area, and Andre Carrillo received it and with one touch and a strong and accurate shot into the left corner, put Peru ahead.
However, Australia had chances to equalize. In the 28th minute, Tom Rogic's shot was saved by the Peruvian goalkeeper, and at the end of the first half, Trent Sainsbury's header went wide of the goal.
With a reliable defense, Peru went into halftime leading 1-0.
In the second half, Peru didn't wait long to increase their lead. In the 50th minute, team captain Paolo Guerrero doubled Peru's advantage, leaving no hope for the Australian goalkeeper.
However, Australia still had opportunities to score. In the 60th minute, it seemed like Aziz Behich had beaten the Peruvian goalkeeper and cut the opponent's lead in half, but then a Peruvian defender stepped in and cleared the ball off the goal line, saving his team.
Australia tried to intensify their game towards the end of the match, but they lacked precision in their shots and passes.
