The plans were announced to build a new modern stadium with a capacity of 36,000 by 2011. The team, currently holding the ninth place in the English championship, has been playing at the "Fratton Park" arena since its foundation in 1899, which accommodates only 20,000 spectators. The club's leaders are not satisfied that a significant part of those willing to attend matches cannot enter the stadium, leading to a loss of revenue from ticket sales. The new stadium would be built at the airport, while the "Fratton Park" would be used for the construction and development of new residential buildings. "This will be the most impressive stadium built against the backdrop of the port," said Peter Storrie, one of the Portsmouth leaders. The team's head coach Harry Redknapp was also pleased: "It seems we will have a unique stadium, which suggests that the club's prospects are very bright."
