The third team to secure a spot in the semifinals was Portugal, who on Saturday in the quarterfinals, just like in the 2004 European Championship, defeated the England team after a series of penalty shootouts. The decisive penalty shootout was scored by Cristiano Ronaldo.

A few minutes later, Wayne Rooney struck from the edge of the penalty area, but the ball went straight to the goalkeeper. Shortly after, the Portuguese launched a counterattack, in which Luis Figo hit the goal, but goalkeeper Paul Robinson played confidently and easily caught the ball.
Later near the English goal, there was confusion when defenders failed to clear the ball after a pass into the penalty area, but luckily for the English, Tiago was unable to reach the ball.
After about twenty minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo entered the penalty area, deceived the defender and struck at goal, but the Portuguese shot went over the crossbar. At the end of the half, a dangerous shot from the edge of the penalty area was taken by L. Figo.
In the penultimate minute of the half, David Beckham had a chance to score, but his penalty shot from twenty meters was unsuccessful. At the very end of the first half, Frank Lampard took a long shot, but Ricardo calmly caught the ball.
At the start of the second half, W.Rooney deceived the defender, passed the ball to D.Beckham, whose shot hit Nuno Valente's hand, but the referee did not see handball and did not award a penalty.
In the 53rd minute, F.Lampard had a great chance to score - after a corner, the ball remained free in front of the goal, but the English keeper hit it unsuccessfully over the crossbar. In the 62nd minute, England was reduced to ten men - W.Rooney was sent off the field. The referee noted the player's foul on Ricardo Carvalho, but the forward did not agree with this decision and, being completely beside himself, pushed C.Ronaldo. After this incident, W.Rooney saw a red card and left the team playing with ten men.
Having a numerical advantage, Portugal tried to press the opponents - after about eighty minutes, L.Figo shot dangerously from the edge, but the English goalkeeper saved the team.
At the end of the half, the English tried to snatch the victory, but the Portuguese defended well, leading the teams to play extra time.
In the first period of extra time, the most dangerous moment was near the Portuguese goal, when S.Gerrard accurately lifted the ball towards the Portuguese goal, but Miguel managed to ward off the tall Peter Crouch from the ball and eliminate the danger. A little later, a shot by C.Ronaldo from afar menacingly flew over the crossbar.
In the second period of extra time, Helder Postiga managed to head the ball into the goal, but it was ruled offside. At the end of extra time, the Portuguese pressed the opponents and had a good opportunity to snatch the victory, but Maniche's shot from the edge of the penalty area missed the target, leading the teams to decide the game through penalty shootouts.
The first Portuguese to take a shot, Simao, sent the ball towards the goal, while F.Lampard's shot was saved by Ricardo. The second Portuguese, Hugo Viana, failed to score, while English Owen Hargreaves scored accurately and leveled the score. The third attempts for both teams were unsuccessful - Petit's shot hit the post, Ricardo deflected S.Gerrard's attempt. The fourth Portuguese shot was successfully converted by H.Postiga, while English Jamie Carragher missed his attempt.
The final penalty taker, Cristiano Ronaldo, disappointed the English team by scoring the decisive penalty, securing the victory for the Portuguese team and sending the English home after the fateful penalty shootout.
