On Monday, sad news reached the Lithuanian football community - legendary Lithuanian footballer and coach Stasys Danisevičius passed away in Vilnius.
S. Danisevičius would have turned 67 in September.
The native of Panevėžys is known as a true legend of the Vilnius "Žalgiris" club, where he spent ten years (from 1976 to 1986), as well as playing for the "Atlantas" and "Panerys" teams.
In the ranks of "Žalgiris," the footballer played almost 300 matches and scored 34 goals.
Twice - in 1979 and 1984 - S. Danisevičius was voted as the best Lithuanian footballer. He also played in the first official national team matches after the restoration of independence against Northern Ireland.
Later, he was the president of the "Panerys" club for a while, then worked with amateurs, coached small-sided football teams, and at one point, he was the coach of the Lithuanian small-sided football team.
He also coached the first-ever Lithuanian Olympic U21 team in 1994-1995, where many well-known Lithuanian footballers and coaches played.
Last autumn, S. Danisevičius played in the Lithuania and FIFA legends match in Kaunas.
The Lithuanian Football Federation expresses its condolences to S. Danisevičius' family and loved ones.
