“Premier” league team “” has signed a contract with former “” defender Hermann Hreidarsson. The 32-year-old Icelandic player took advantage of a clause in his contract with Charlton, allowing him to leave the club if they were relegated from the Premier League, becoming a free agent and accepting an offer from Portsmouth.
“I always had great respect for Harry Redknapp (Portsmouth manager - ed.). I almost accepted his offer 4 years ago when I chose Charlton, but now, given a second chance, I decided without hesitation,” said Hreidarsson.
In the recently concluded Premier League season, Portsmouth finished in 9th place, just missing out on the UEFA Cup.
“I talked to the manager about the club and its goals, but I didn't find out much. However, Portsmouth achieved a lot last season, and I think the club is heading in the right direction,” said the Icelandic player, who has represented his national team over 50 times.
A few days earlier, Pompey signed a three-year contract with former Manchester City defender Sylvain Distin.
Hreidarsson is not guaranteed a place on the field because of this: “I know I am not guaranteed a spot in the starting lineup. However, it will only make things more interesting, as there are many great players in the team.”
Hreidarsson has been playing in England since 1997, having also represented Crystal Palace, Brentford, Wimbledon, and Ipswich.
Portsmouth is also actively interested in the Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari from the Italian club Udinese.
