From the very beginning of the match, both teams played fast football. The Bulgarians had the first opportunity. In the 15th minute, after a pass from the left, Jankovičius hit a powerful shot, but the ball flew past the post. Soon after, the Swedes also launched a dangerous attack. After a pass into the penalty area, Larsson stumbled while kicking the ball, and it dangerously flew past the goal. After 10 minutes, Berbatov headed the ball dangerously, but the Swedes were saved from a goal by their goalkeeper. Just two minutes later, the first goal was scored: the Bulgarian defenders made a mistake by playing an offside trap, Ibrahimović jumped ahead of the goalkeeper, passed the ball to Ljungberg who rushed to help, and he sent the ball into the empty net.

In the second half, the Swedes continued to create opportunities. Ibrahimović delicately passed the ball with his heel to Ljungberg in the penalty area, but the scorer of the first goal failed to defeat the Bulgarian goalkeeper. Soon after, the second goal fell into the southeastern goal. Larsson headbutted the crossed ball from the left. The Swedish leader didn't stop and a minute later he scored his second goal - Svensson crossed the ball into the penalty area, the goalkeeper did not catch it, and Larsson easily "closed" this pass. After taking the ball from the defender, Ibrahimović broke away from the goalkeeper but missed the shot. In the 74th minute, Ljungberg fell into the penalty area and the referee awarded a questionable penalty kick, which was converted by Ibrahimović, completely burying the Bulgarians. But that was not the end. After making a substitution, Allback received a perfect pass from Larsson and scored the fifth goal for the Swedish national team by running alone towards the goalkeeper. The match ended with a score of 5-0 and Sweden achieved the biggest victory in this European Championship so far.
