Before the upcoming Nations League match between the national teams of Lithuania and Cyprus, commentator Nerijus Kesminas expressed his opinion on social media.
"If you were planning to spend Friday evening in Kaunas watching football, and the decision to move the Lithuania and Cyprus match to Marijampolė ruined your plans and you decided to stay in Vilnius, we have a live broadcast at 'Dyvuose' starting at 7 PM.
For those who are interested, I intend to stay for the France - Italy match as well. It begins at 9:45 PM.
It would be funny to talk about the reasons why football has navigated to Marijampolė if it weren't so sad.
Nothing changes - when it comes to stadium construction and maintenance, we have been, are, and will probably remain a banana republic for many years to come.
Another thing is that the deviation of several dozen kilometers won't become a problem for either the Lithuanian or Cyprus teams. Only for the fans and the reputation of the country's football, although... Honestly, what is that reputation anyway?
The bigger problem for national team coach Edgaras Jankauskas is filling the gaps on the field. With such limited playing resources, the team will have to manage without a host of leaders: Gvidas Gineitis, Edgaras Utkaus, Paulius Golubickas, and Fiodor Černych.
But considering the C division group, which besides us and Cyprus also includes Romania and Kosovo, if anyone can become a client for the Lithuanians, it is primarily Cyprus. Especially playing at home.
France against Italy? It should be serious there. Both because the Nations League is a backup route to the finals tournament of the 2026 World Cup, and because there isn't much to send to the store from this group - besides Italy and France, you will also find Belgium in the list of group teams,” wrote N. Kesminas.
